The costs of responding to major storms, such as Hurricane Matthew in October 2016, are not fully included in the normal electric rates that customers pay. FPL is using a PSC-approved procedure that enables FPL and Florida’s other investor-owned electric utilities to temporarily adjust electric rates for 12 months to recover the costs directly associated with storm recovery, such as our massive response to Hurricane Matthew.

The temporary, 12-month storm recovery surcharge -- $3.36 per month on a typical FPL residential customer bill (1,000 kilowatt-hours) -- will begin in March 2017. Fortunately, FPL's typical customer bills – even with the temporary hurricane recovery surcharge – will continue to be among the lowest in Florida and the nation.
